All I did was apply what I knew from Reaper to PT and figure what I need to do to use the same methodology/philosophy in PT. By the same gesture, I was running sessions on my own in PT within a short period of time (with the occasional DUH moment) simply because I knew my platform so well.

The sad part is, learning how to use one DAW and master it, is usually a great starting point for learning another and gaining the ability to transition. I'm a Pro Tools guy - and it doesn't really serve my purposes to learn another DAW inside and out. Reaper handles any VST I have thrown at it, and opens faster than anything else I have tried. Sometimes I'll go into the midi editor to move a snare a little bit or change the attack on a kick. I prefer organic loose beats and Reapers tape recorder style is perfect for me. Reaper is the first DAW I learned after keyboard workstations and I cant figure any other DAW out cause I just go straight back to Reaper and make a beat real fast. I'm constantly turning snap on and off to move stuff around. After I have the main groove, mute the parts I want to mute for the change up, intro outro or whatever and compose those parts, then just move the different sections around where I want them. Load up Poise, Kontakt or whatever, record drums in real time without quantize or I use the swing or quantize from my fantom somtimes.

First thing I do is make a time selection for the # of bars I want the main groove to be from 2 to 6 or 2 to 10 since I don't like my tracks butting up against the beginning.

At $60 a license you know this software is going to be popular (it already is) and I've met quite a few guys who use PTHD at work and use Reaper at home. If you are looking for something that encompasses all facets of song making from production to actual recording though, I think that Reaper absolutely is a contender. Stop trying to find out why you can't do something and start learning about what you can do. If you are going to use Reaper or PT then just stick with them, learn all that you can. If you are going to use Reason then just use Reason, don't flip flop if you can help it. I don't like using the phrase 'for hip hop,' when describing technology or tools but the real secret is committing to your tools. Reaper 4 is out and has added in numerous features for people who compose with midi instruments, but one of the big new changes was the addition of pitch envelopes on a per clip basis so that you can get your Vari FI on. I am lightning quick in Reaper and for specifics it just makes sense to do it that way. What I do normally is use Shortcircuit for coarse editing (it has a graphic waveform display for truncating and loop points) and use Reaper if I'm doing finer timestretch multichop edits.

As well Shortcircuit is free and utilizes drag n drop functions (as does Reaper!). No it doesn't come with some pads that light up but I spend more time listening than looking when I make music. As a producer/engineer Reaper is a completely seamless process for me.ДЄs far as a sampler I cannot recommend Shortcircuit VSTI enough. I started using Reaper almost 3 years ago and just committed to using it. I've had experience using Maschine, Reason, Acid, Cubase (extensively) as well as getting my start on an MPC60 and using various workstations over the years. Reaper is my main platform for production.
